Check out this free e-book from Massimo Vignelli, one of the foremost practitioners of Modernist design. It’s a great resource for all designers but I think it’s especially useful for the current generation. I feel like we are often short changed in our design educations when it comes to theory and history. Without that foundation it’s easy to fall into the attitude of valuing style over substance.

Design without semantics is shallow and meaningless but, unfortunately it is also ubiquitous, and that is why it is so important that young designers train themselves to start the design process in the correct way- the only way that can most enrich their design. -Massimo Vignelli
